Control The Controllables

Some real talk on this whole COVID-19, fear & panic situation...

I used to struggle with debilitating anxiety & panic attacks. I remember so clearly how much it ruled my life. Something like a pandemic would easily have flipped me out into full anxiety mode.

Often during these panic attacks, I would call my mom. So many times she would repeat to me "control the controllables".

That phrase is all that keeps ringing in my ears amidst this pandemic. There are so many things we are terrified of that are entirely out of our control. There are so many unknowns here that we have no say in. That's just the reality of life sometimes.

But we can choose how we respond to this world full of dread and panic.

My friends and I are choosing to make the best of it. Throw a quarantine party with you and your roomies. Dance around & blast the music. Get in the Word. Grab that book you have always wanted to read off your shelf. Create some art. Backyard campout. Spend more quality time with your loved ones.

It is scary out there. No doubt. It is so hard to not look toward the future full of unknowns and frightening possibilities. But don't let worry of things that aren't happening consume your life and your joy. If you can't control it, let it go. Let God be God and do his thing.

Stay in the present day.

Control the controllables.

God's got the rest.

"Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself."

—Matthew 6:34
